WAIT, YOU SELL YARN? I THOUGHT YOU JUST SOLD FINISHED KNITS!
We’ve only sold finished knit items until now. Both of us have known for a long time (since we were first brainstorming this business!) that we would likely want to grow both our crafts and our offerings, so here we are – we’re going to start offering hand-dyed yarn.
WHEN?
You will be able to buy yarn from us starting on Friday, September 20th at noon EST. There will be a new menu bar option on this website titled “Shop Yarn,” with a selection of pages for you to browse. You should also be able to purchase yarn through our Facebook shop and its associated Messenger account, although due to Facebook policies and procedures selling on that platform may be delayed for review when the listings are published. If you’d rather purchase through Facebook but you’re having problems, please get in touch with us.
WHAT KIND OF YARN?
We’re opening on Friday with two different yarn bases in nine different colorways. For now, we’ll offer:
- Rustic Worsted- 100g in 100% Peruvian Highland wool
- Heritage Sock- 100g in 75% superwash fine highland wool, 25% nylon
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
All current colorways of Rustic Worsted will be $22/skein, and Heritage Sock will be $26/skein.
WHERE CAN I BUY IT?
Either here on our website cozyhearthyarnworks.com under the menu tab “Shop Yarn,” through our Facebook Page, or through Facebook Messenger.
OKAY, BUT CAN I SHOP IN PERSON ANYWHERE? I LIKE TO TOUCH THE YARN.
Currently, no. We don’t intend to offer our yarn through retail brick and mortar stores on a regular basis, but we’ll consider trunk shows, fiber festivals, and similar events. Nothing is currently scheduled, but if you’d like to see us at a particular event, let us know, and we’ll see if that event works for us!
HOW FAST CAN I GET THE YARN?
For now, we dye all yarn “to order” – like our knits, we start working when we receive your order, and we ship it to you when it’s finished. This allows us to hand-match your skeins to ensure consistency, and helps us avoid the many, many, many problems inherent in storing a large inventory of yarn in a tiny city apartment.
That said, dyeing is a much faster process than knitting! Depending on the size of your order, we can have your yarn dyed within one week, and our standard shipping options (USPS Priority Mail) should reach anywhere within the continental US within 2-3 business days once your order is on its way. If, for some reason, you desperately need yarn faster than that, you can get in touch and we’ll see what we can do, but expect to pay a rush fee in addition to extra shipping costs, and keep in mind the limitations of a two-person working team and also physics. Part of high-quality dye work is taking our time to make sure we do it right!
DO YOU HAVE ANY DISCOUNTS?
There’s a few ways you can save money while shopping for yarn with us.
First, you can just… shop with us! Part of our general ethos of providing accessible fiber products includes price – we take extra steps to make sure that, while we’re paying ourselves as fairly as possible and sourcing materials as ethically as reasonable, you can still afford to buy our yarn. We want you to have our yarn more than we want to make a bazillion dollars or anything like that.
That said, taking care of ourselves and our suppliers is still more expensive than big-box yarns, and we get that! So we offer a few discounts:
- All orders through our shop -yarn or knits- now automatically apply free domestic shipping at checkout when your order total crosses $100
- Our “woops!” yarn – either when someone read a dye recipe wrong, some variable changed the dye pot chemistry unexpectedly, or a colorway experiment went not-as-expected – will be available at discounted prices. Since this yarn has already been dyed, it will also ship faster!
- Keep an eye out for discount codes – they won’t be frequent, and won’t necessarily be large, but we like to reward loyal fans.

I’VE HEARD SCARY THINGS ABOUT HAND-DYED YARN BLEEDING COLOR EVERYWHERE – HOW CAN I AVOID THAT? DOES YOUR YARN DO THAT?
We’ll write more about this topic soon, but the short answers include:
- follow the label care instructions that come with your package (cold water and gentle soaps), and
- our yarn really, really should not!
We take extra care to make sure our dyes are thoroughly set in our yarn. They should stand up to the kind of wear and tear and washing procedures that any finished objects would undergo. Again, we’ll write more about the science behind dye bleeding problems soon, but rest assured- we’re thinking ahead about that problem, because we knit with this yarn too!
